Different Types of EPOS Solutions
As we have already established, EPOS systems particularly benefit organisations
with a large throughput of goods to a large customer base. Typically the larger
the throughput of product and the larger the customer base the more sophisticated
the EPOS solution will need to be to maximise benefits. However, it is not
normally necessary for smaller businesses to invest in complex solutions so
appropriate EPOS solutions for smaller businesses can be very cost effective
in terms of the benefits they yield. EPOS solutions benefit large and small
businesses alike although the specific EPOS solution that a business selects
should depend on the size and characteristics of the business.
Stand-alone EPOS systems:
Stand-alone EPOS systems generally cost thousands of pounds / dollars for which
you can expect to get a dedicated EPOS terminal, the EPOS software, a printer
and a networked back office computer. Such stand alone EPOS systems normally
have XML or EDI links for connecting with your website or other back-office
systems. This type of EPOS solution would be appropriate for a business with
one or two retail stores.
Software-based solutions:
With software-based solutions you would use your existing PC equipment and
peripherals to run an EPOS software application. These kind of EPOS software
applications cost hundreds of pounds / dollars to buy. Additional hardware
items such as magnetic card reader, POS keyboard, keylock, operator monitor,
cash drawer, customer display etc, are increasingly available in USB connection
format allowing you to 'plug and play'.
EPOS system and accounts linking solution:
Software packages linking EPOS to your accounting system can cost hundreds
to thousands of pounds / dollars. However, the back office computer will
need its own software and you may also need additional modules such as Electronic
Funds Transfer (EFT), label printing or remote access. This approach can
provide greater flexibility while at the same time costing less than buying
an off-the-shelf EPOS system, however, you may need assistance with setting
it up.
Outsource EPOS to a third party specialist:
Outsourcing EPOS processing to a third party specialist has relatively recently
become a viable option in the UK. An Application Service Provider (ASP) will
'rent' you specialised software and provide a secure, internet-based link
to your system along with consultancy and management. The ASP provider may
also be able to host and integrate your EDI system as well as address and
technical issues you may experience.
Customised EPOS solutions:
Bespoke EPOS solutions are designed and customised by EPOS consultants and
EPOS software specialists to integrate with your existing hardware / software
/ accounts and website. The costs for bespoking EPOS solutions vary a great
deal but generally expect to pay thousands of pounds / dollars – while
it may seem quite expensive to go the route of the customised EPOS solution
it can prove to be a very cost-effective solution for larger retailers.
